WELCOME TO MY HOME
On the internet, anyway.
Without sugarcoating what I can't change, let me just say... I am a Dominican writer (born and raised) who feels more comfortable to write in English. And, I must admit that when it comes to embracing my dominicanidad, I've gone on a journey from ignorance to shame and eventually to self-awareness and pride.
It's been a long journey. But, a fruitful one because it's brought me here. Here. Here is Home; it's this place in my life when I've acknowledged that I am my first home. For years, I struggled to make sense of this. I finally did, when I wrote a book about it.
I've come to realize that feeling more comfortable expressing myself in English is not a betrayal of my roots; rather, it's another layer of my identity—a little something extra that influences and shapes who I am. I’ve accepted that language does not determine my worth or my connection to my country, to my heritage. It is not a matter of right or wrong, good or bad—it simply is.
Language bridges hearts, minds, and cultures. For now and for the sake of the stories I write, I have found my bridge in the English language.
